Autonomous Key is a physical NFC device that pairs with a companion app to lock away addictive apps. Instead of relying on self-control, users must physically scan the key to access locked apps, making the process more deliberate. Each unlock session lasts up to 60 minutes before apps are automatically locked again. This method shifts the burden of resisting distractions from internal willpower to an external, physical action. The key is compact, measuring about three inches, and works with Android 8.0 and later, as well as iOS 15 and later. It is currently in beta following a Kickstarter campaign and began shipping earlier this month. It’s available in five colors: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown.
The companion app provides AI-powered insights, tracking how often users unlock distracting apps, how long they remain accessible, and the times of day they’re most likely to reach for them. The AI summarizes these habits with a deliberately sassy personality. For example, if a user repeatedly unlocks apps immediately after locking them, the app might suggest that the key wasn’t far enough away and recommend placing it somewhere less convenient. Unlike many app blockers, there are no subscriptions or premium tiers required to unlock additional features. One key can be paired with multiple phones, making it a practical option for people with multiple devices or families.
During testing, the NFC scan occasionally required multiple attempts to register, which could be a drawback for locking important apps like messaging or email. If the key is lost, the current workaround is to uninstall and reinstall the companion app. If apps are already unlocked, users can simply remove the key from their account. The company is developing a backup unlock method for a future update. Autonomous Key is currently in beta following a Kickstarter campaign and began shipping earlier this month.
