Google DeepMind released AlphaGenome Atlas on April 4, 2024, saying it predicts how single-letter changes in DNA affect genes. It is the company's first major update in biomedical research since 2022.
The tool reported an accuracy rate of 89 percent on benchmark tests, measured on a dataset of 10 million genetic sequences. That compares with an earlier accuracy rate of 82 percent.
AlphaGenome Atlas is built on DeepMind's AlphaFold architecture and targets genetic research in oncology and rare diseases. Availability begins in the second quarter of 2024, initially for academic researchers and pharmaceutical companies.
"AlphaGenome Atlas represents a significant step forward in understanding the genetic basis of disease," said Greg Uyeno, a freelance science journalist. "The tool enables researchers to explore the vast genetic landscape with unprecedented precision."
The announcement follows the release of AlphaFold 3, which revolutionized protein structure prediction. The source itself frames the significance as an expansion of DeepMind's efforts to decode the human genome.
Google DeepMind did not say how the tool will be used in clinical settings, and the open question remains about its scalability to larger datasets. The company said it will continue to refine the model and expand its applications.
