OpenAI has identified a growing trend of workers using ChatGPT to perform tasks typically handled by professionals in other fields. The company’s analysis of over 800,000 work-related messages revealed that 43.5% of job-specific queries involved tasks outside the user’s profession. Marketing and engineering tasks saw the highest crossover, with users taking on responsibilities previously reserved for specialists, such as contract reviews, data analysis, and website troubleshooting. At small businesses, non-specialists are especially likely to use AI for marketing tasks, indicating a shift in how work is distributed across roles.

The findings suggest a broader trend in how job responsibilities are evolving, even before formal job titles or descriptions change. OpenAI classified tasks using the U.S. occupational database O*NET, which maps activities to standard job profiles. It excluded common tasks such as writing, summarizing, and scheduling, focusing instead on more specialized functions. The data highlights how AI is being integrated into workflows, enabling non-specialists to handle tasks that were once the domain of experts.
