AWS is using Qualcomm for AI inference while Qualcomm uses AWS Bedrock to design the chips. The collaboration focuses on custom chip design for AI inference workloads, with Qualcomm leveraging AWS services to speed up its chip development process.
Qualcomm is designing custom chips for AWS across multiple product generations, with a focus on AI inference. The two companies are also working on optical interconnects with bandwidth up to 1.6 terabits to handle the growing data traffic in AI infrastructure.
Qualcomm brings its track record in power-efficient chip design, while Amazon contributes its cloud infrastructure. In return, Qualcomm uses AWS services like Amazon Bedrock to speed up its chip design process. Amazon is Qualcomm's third big data center win since June.
"Qualcomm aims to hit $15 billion in data center revenue by 2029," said Jonathan Kemper, a contributor at thedecoder. The collaboration is part of Qualcomm's strategy to expand its presence in the data center market.
The announcement follows Microsoft's deployment of Qualcomm's HBC memory architecture in Azure. Qualcomm's focus on efficiency spans both data center chips and edge devices, with recent efforts in AI research on smartphones.
Qualcomm did not say how it plans to scale its AI inference solutions beyond AWS, and the open question is how it will compete with other chipmakers in the data center space. AWS is adding Qualcomm's designs alongside its own Trainium, Graviton, and Nitro chip families.
